The Rhinos With Borders (RWB) team have successfully translocated 87 rhino but moving the remaining 13 has been temporarily postponed due to drought in Botswana. When a natural system is stressed by environmental conditions such as this, the risk of attempting to translocate animals at this time would be irresponsible. The team are still as committed as ever, and continue to fundraise for the security and monitoring of these translocated rhinos.
The incredible conservation effort undertaken of moving these rhino has already resulted in the birth of no fewer than 30 calves. This is an absolutely phenomenal achievement as breeding is used as one of the conservation measurement tools.
The combined efforts of RWB, the Department of Wildlife & National Parks (DWNP), the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and the Rhino Conservation Botswana (RCB) teams has been a powerful, united achievement in the preservation and translocation of this endangered species. Private sector operators and programs generously donated the rhino crates to the DWNP in order to tackle the rescue exercise.
RWB will be on standby to constantly monitor the weather conditions and drought situation in Botswana. As soon as conditions improve, they will inform the DWNP and translocate the remaining 13 animals to reach their target of 100.
